Honduran-born comic, Carlos Mencia was not the only Hispanic celebrity speaking against Arizona’s new, harsh immigration (SB 1070) law; Grammy award-winning singers Shakira and Gloria Estefan did their share too.
Colombian-born singer, Shakira met with Arizona officials, last Thursday to discuss the impact of what this new law will bring to hard-working Latinos and their families, as well as to the state of Arizona if this bill comes to place.
As for Cuban-born singer, Gloria Estefan, she was among thousands of protesters in Los Angeles, on Saturday, rallying against Arizona’s new bill. Atop a flatbed truck, Estefan said, “We’re good people.” Estefan also added, “We’ve given a lot to this country. This country has given a lot to us.” Police said about 50,000 protesters turned out at Los Angeles’ rally last Saturday.
The State of Arizona passed a controversial law, in late April authorizing police officers to stop suspected illegal immigrants and demand proof of citizenship. Many critics think this will cause racial profiling. Some people are for the law, and also attended the May 1st nationwide rally that occurred in major cities like, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Denver, Dallas, Chicago, Miami and New York. There were supporters of the new law holding signs reading, “Illegal is a Crime,” while the majority were picketers against the law, holding such signs reading, “We are Arizona!” “What does an Illegal person look like?” and “Boycott Arizona!”
